Wedding trend: Green Weddings

Planning an eco-friendly event is a concept that has been gaining popularity with each passing wedding season in recent years. This comes as no surprise; it seems everywhere you look these days yet another company or product has "gone green"! We have hybrid cars, canvas shopping bags in lieu of traditional plastic, organic groceries, chemical-free cleaning products; you can even coat your house with environmentally sound paint! When planning a green wedding, the possibilities are endless. From conflict free diamonds in your engagement ring to local farmers market flowers in your bouquet to leaving the reception in a hybrid stretch limo, every aspect of your event can be carefully planned with regard to environmental preservation. The Great Green Wedding website has hundreds of ideas and tips. Some of our favorites are invitations made from recycled paper, live evergreen seedlings as wedding favors (imagine how many trees would be planted each year if even half of all married couples did this at their wedding...), and asking friends and family to donate old or broken gold jewelery to be melted down and made into your wedding bands.

Here are four more articles about going green on your big day:

How to green your wedding - Grist.org
How to green your wedding - TreeHugger.com
10 steps to a green wedding - The Green Life
How Green Was My Wedding - The New York Times

What an interesting idea with endless ways to make your wedding unique! We would have an absolute field day videoing all of those special details!

Annie & Andy - Stone Manor Inn

Annie and Andy were married May 25, 2008 at Stone Manor Country Club in Middletown, Maryland and Steve was their videographer. The 19th century manor sits on a 100 acre estate with a large garden tent for receptions and historic barn, pond, bridge and gazebo throughout the grounds. May 25th was a busy day for Video Express, and thankfully the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Andy and his father and friends took advantage of both the weather and manor grounds in a very unique way - by launching potato guns! Keep an eye out for it in the slow motion summary, posted below.

Update!

It's been a while since we've posted... Mark and Julie were lucky enough to be vacationing in Europe (!!) while I (Jeanette) held down fort at the studio and all us videographers were busy with early Summer weddings. We're back in swing now, gearing up for the big WEVA Convention in August and the hectic Fall wedding season.

For now, try to stay cool in the July heat (especially if you plan on getting married outside :)) and keep checking back for new posts and video clips!

June 16, 2008

Online viewing now available!

We are pleased to announce that we are now offering clients the option to post their event highlights online for easy viewing and sharing with friends and family!

AWP, May 28, 2008

Last Tuesday night was the monthly AWP (Assosciation of Wedding Professionals) meeting. It was held at the new Legacy Hotel in Rockville, Maryland. Most of you probably remember it as the Ramada Inn on Rockville Pike; in the past year, the hotel has changed ownership and been completely rennovated into a contemporary boutique lodging experience. Reminiscint of European getaways, the building very stylish without feeling fussy or uptight. The banquet and meeting area can comfortably hold a wedding reception for around 200 people.

We also had the pleasure of meeting the new owner of Fiore Floral, a local florist. They provided the flowers for Jaclyn & Charl's wedding May 17 - which we just happened to video! They did a fantastic job; check out some stills we pulled from Jeanette's footage of their wedding:

Jenna Bush's wedding! - pictures & info

We can't resist peeking at celebrity weddings - and this one is a biggie! Check out these pictures taken and released by the White House of Jenna Bush's lakeside wedding (President George W. Bush's daughter). Jenna was married to Henry Hager (a former White House aide) this past Saturday, May 10th, at the Bush family ranch in Crawford, Texas. The bride wore a v-neck mermaid cut Oscar de la Renta gown and twin sister Barbara was the maid of Honor. Looks like it was a classy, tasteful, springtime wedding. Too bad it wasn't a D.C. wedding - what a day that would have been to video, given the oppotunity!!

Why Wedding Video?

"Imagine your dad, decked out in a tux and with his glass raised, delivering a toast that leaves you and most of your guests reaching for the hankies. Your photographer will snap the pics to preserve the moment, but after the champagne glasses clink together, Dad's words are only a memory -- unless you have them on film." --Miles Stiverson, "Videography: Video's Hottest Trends", TheKnot.com

Unsure about hiring a videographer? Many couples underestimate the value of a wedding video. Surveys of newleyweds commissioned by WEVA and conducted by Breakthrough Marketing in 2002 and 2005 revealed the following:
  • Before the wedding, only a little more than half considered wedding video a “Top 10” service. After the wedding, that number climbs to 75%.
  • 38% did not have their weddings videotaped by anyone, and apparently have some regrets. 63% of them now recommend that future brides hire a professional videographer.
  • 60% of brides who did not have their wedding day videoed now say they wished they had.
  • *When asked: “If you had a choice between looking at your grandparent’s wedding photos or their wedding video, which would you choose?” 61% (of Brides spending $30,000+ on their wedding - which is below the average cost of a DC-Area wedding) said they would rather see the video.
Source: Weva.com

Here at Video Express, we've found these to be the most common reasons to hire a videographer:
  • The day goes by so fast it becomes a total blur by the morning after.
  • To send copies to relatives who couldn't make the wedding due to distance, illness, etc.
  • To capture elderly relatives on video as they dance and enjoy themselves.
  • Throughout the day, many things happen that the couple never gets to see.
  • They want to share this special day with their children and grandchildren and watch the video on their anniversary.
  • Many brides and grooms are in the military and have to spend time apart; the video is wonderful to watch during those absences in which spouses miss each other.
  • To capture all the silly moments of the day - your Uncle dancing is funnier when you can see him move and hear the music and cheers of the crowd, and while the photographer usually snaps a posed picture of the bride tossing her bouquet, video records all of the bridesmaids as they yell and dive for it.
  • Funny comments people make to the camera and to each other and well wishes made for the couple can get a good laugh and be enjoyed for years to come.
  • Would you prefer to look at photographs of your favorite TV show instead of watching it live?

And the most important reason of all... why not? It's the most special day of your lives. Hear the string quartet play the Bridal March and watch your groom's reaction when he sees you for the first time. Watch a tear fall down your cheek as your recite your vows and listen to everyone cheer as your share your first kiss. See your reception room fully decorated and sparkling with candlelight, ready for everyone to enter. Relive the sights and sounds forever by hiring a professional videographer.

Personal Wedding Websites - Why you need one!

"Did you get our RSVP?"
"I need directions to the church!"
"When is the bridal shower?"
"Can groomsmen pick up their tuxes yet?"
"I don't remember where you're registered!"

Coordinating the details of your big day will be stressful enough, why make it worse by fielding all of your guests' concerns on your own? A new trend rapidly gaining popularity is the personalized wedding website. Like a computerized personal assistant, these sites allow you to do everything from manage RSVP's online to post pictures after the wedding for your guests to enjoy. It will most likely cost you a small monthly subscription, but it is well worth it. Top features you receive are among the following:

Personalized web address
For example, "julieandmark.com" or "marklovesjulie.com". This feature makes your site both personalized and easy to remember.
Personal stories and photos
Perfect to share the story of how you met and got engaged, this feature allows family and friends to learn something they might not have known, while introducing the two of you to guests who might not yet know you very well.
Introduce the Bridal Party
Guests always want to know who you've selected as your bridal party, and now you can let them know with a page dedicated to bios and photos of your special group.
Online RSVP
Saves time, money and the stress of slacker guests who forget to mail response cards! Guests can RSVP to your wedding right on your site, and you can keep track of who has responded and who hasn't (via mail or online) when you log in. Many sites will send you an email immediately after a guest responds. This is also an easy way for guests to select their meal, if needed.
Quizzes and Polls
Can't decide on a first dance song or honeymoon location? Have visitors help decide with an interactive poll! Or, see how well your friends and family know you with a quiz.

The possibilities are endless. Customizable pages where you can list travel and lodging options for out of town guests, registry information, directions, who's who of your vendors, calendars of events and more are at your fingertips. Layouts are customizable to match the theme and colors of your wedding and you can even have your page play music. Here are some examples of this great interactive tool:

Brian Bergman, DJ

Located in Montgomery County, Maryland, Brian Bergman is a good friend of Video Express and fellow member of AWP. He is an energetic guy who is great at getting any party going! More than just a DJ, Brian always tries to keep the crowd entertained and motivated to move. Many of Brian's brides even opt to have him bring giveaways for their guests to correspond with different songs - think top hats for "New York, New York", maracas for "Hot Hot Hot" and sunglasses and harmonicas for the Blues Brothers. Dancers are also an option, though Brian isn't afraid to hit the floor himself! Brian also takes a friendly, personal approach to his business and enjoys getting to know each individual couple. He describes his style in his own words below:

"I'm an interactive DJ that does weddings, along with bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate and private events. I always meet face to face with potential clients prior to a booking decision being made, which allows us to see if we have a fit and should work together. I also coordinate numerous times with my clients prior to their event, and then run the event from start to finish the day of. I tailor my style to the client, but enjoy most being able to entertain and motivate the crowd."

Katherine & Stewart - March 29, 2008

Katherine & Stewart were married March 29, 2008, at Trinity UMC in McLean, Virginia with the reception following at The Arts Club of Washington, D.C. Jon was their videographer and managed to get great footage despite the strictness of the church. Many churches have very stern rules when it comes to videography and photography. We are often challenged to abide by the officiant and coordinator's wishes while still producing a quality emotional video. Looking at the video clip below, you'd never be able to tell that Jon had limited movement and location during the wedding. He did a wonderful job making the church wedding coordinator feel comfortable enough with his presence to allow him good positioning for the ceremony.

Jon says that his goal when videoing weddings is to make a family heirloom movie that will be enjoyed for years to come. He wants every bride to be proud to show off her finished video. Katherine and Stewart's video is no exception! Take a look at their slow motion summary, posted below.

Please note that the default size of the video player is designed to provide the best possible viewing quality. Full screen viewing is not recommended. To view our footage in full broadcast quality, please contact the main studio in Silver Spring.

A Word of Thanks

We recently blogged about the wedding of Carol Turner and Avi Klein that took place March 1, 2008 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Carol was kind enough to write a nice letter of recommendation to Washingtonian Magazine about Video Express and send us a copy, as well.

"I found VEP straight out of the Washingtonian Wedding Guide. I called and spoke with Mark and Julie Bargeski, the owners, and I was immediately impressed and hired them on the spot. While they have a lot of videographers who work for them, I was lucky enough to have Mark shoot my wedding. We received the video two weeks after our wedding and i was BLOWN AWAY! My family was reluctant to shoot a video but my husband and I were so convinced that we ended up paying for it ourselves. Well, we were right. The video is beautiful. Mark was completely unobtrusive and was able to capture the entire wedding so we will be able to show it to our children! The montages he made were beautifully cut and as a television producer working in Hollywood, I am very critical!"

Thank you for the kind words, Carol! We hope you and Avi enjoy both your video and new life together for years to come.

Princess for a Night - Donate your bridesmaid dress

Have an old bridesmaid dress you swore you'd wear again? Instead of letting it collect dust in the back of your closet, why not donate it and help a local girl look like a princess on her prom night?

Until April 25, 2008 (only ten days left!), drop off drycleaned and gently worn dresses at any of the five locations listed below. Over three days in May, girls from Fairfax County public high schools who can't afford prom dresses will able to come and select one from the donations - for free! All formal dresses are accepted for the drive, but bridesmaid dresses are especially desired; they are often bright, intense colors and have pretty details like beadwork, embroidery and sashes. Shoes, jewerly, handbags and unused make-up are also encouraged. Items can be dropped off at any of the following locations:

* Edison High School, main office (5801 Franconia Rd., Alexandria). Monday through Friday 7 AM to 4 PM.

Understanding Wedding Videography

It is easy to feel overwhelmed and confused when meeting with videographers; many couples have little to no video experience and are entering a completely foreign aspect of event planning. It is a good idea to read about common terminology and aspects of video before you speak with any videographers. We have compiled a glossary of terms you're likely to hear to make the experience a little easier.

A-roll: Refers to the main camera footage and main videographer.
Authoring/Burning: Process of burning your final edited wedding video to DVD and/or DVD master.
Audio Mix: Style of using a combination of both natural and pre-recorded sound (often background music) in editing; common in documentary style videography.
B-roll: Refers to secondary camera/camera person and resulting footage.
Capture/digitzation: Process of loading raw footage onto computer for editing.
Chaptered DVD: A DVD with a main menu similar to Hollywood-released DVDs; often called "scene selection", pre-set chapters like Preliminary, Ceremony, First Kiss, and Cake Cutting make the navigation of your DVD both easy and personalized.
Cinematic: A highly-edited style of videography often consisting of staged shots and pre-recorded music and sound that presents the wedding video as a crafted story.
Digital Effect/Transition: Effects added to video in post production; for example, black and white, letterbox/widescreen, color and exposure adjustments, slow or fast motion. Digital transitions are fades and flashes that dissolve between different shots and important moments, usually signifying change in sound or location.
DV/Digital Video: The current standard video format. Allows for very clear capturing of images and quality video in low light. Does not lose quality during the duplication process and holds up very well over time.
DVD: Digital Video Disc. The replacement for VHS and Analog tape, this format is playable through a DVD player or computer. Retains high level of video quality.
Editing: The process of putting together your wedding video. Includes dissolving between takes and transitions, deleting unwanted scenes, audio manipulation, addition of background music, switching between camera angles, titling, credits, and rendering the final version to proper format for DVD burning.
High Definition (HD) Video: Newest video format. Offers the highest possible image quality but is not yet the industry standard. Can be very expensive for Brides and Grooms due the the fact that video companies have to buy and learn totally new equipment (cameras, editing software, HD DVD's and DVD software, DVD burning roms, etc) to fully produce an HD wedding video. Many consumers also still have standard definition DVD players and TVs, making watching a video in true HD not yet a reality.
Highlight Reel: A short video summary of your wedding showcasing the most important and emotional moments. Commonly uses effects like black and white and slow motion for an artistic look.
Master: The final edited version of your video on either DV-Cam digital tape or a Data DVD for storage use only. Video Express masters to Data DVD.
Non-Chaptered/In-house DVD: A DVD that, when put in a player or computer, immediately plays from the beginning of the video and has no pre-selected chapter markers or menus.
Non-Linear Editing (NLE): The industry standard of editing digital video via computer editing software. Common programs are Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid or Avid Express, and Final Cut Pro (for mac users only).
Photo Montage: A common way to open wedding videos, photo montages usually consist of pictures of the couple from birth to engagement and are set to music.
Post-Production: Refers to any work done to your video after the wedding. I.e., capturing, editing, burning, etc.
Render: The process of compressing the edited video and audio tracks of your wedding to one final video file to be burned to DVD and master. Common formats are .avi, .mov, and .mpg.
Thank You DVD's: A short mini-DVD that includes your photo montage, highlight and credits to use as a Thank You gift for bridal party, family and friends.
Unmanned camera: A stationary camera set up on a tripod that is used for alternate angles in editing and audio recording.

Don't be afraid to speak up during your consultations; a good videographer encourages questions and will more than adequately explain anything you might not understand. It is beneficial for both parties that the couple fully comprehend all aspects of the video process to avoid confusion during or after the wedding.

Good luck and happy planning!

Planning idea - butter service

At a recent wedding we saw butter served in a way we've never seen it before!

Very interesting and adds a bit of character and whimsy to the table. If you want to (and your caterer is willing... and the leaves are big enough!), you might be able to skip the plate entirely. Fewer dishes to wash and your guests get to see something original!

"Why I Go To Weddings" - Wedding bloopers video clip

We received this clip via email a of couple days ago. Though none of this footage is ours (it was streamed through a video sharing site and judging by the ABC logo and laugh track is likely a product of America's Funniest Home Videos), we have seen our share of events like this! It proves why video can be such a priceless (and sometimes humorous) gift in the grand scheme of your wedding. Enjoy!

Diane George - Covenant Weddings

Diane George is the Owner and Senior Consultant of the popular D.C-area based company Covenant Weddings. A member of the Association of Bridal Consultants and winner of the 2006 A-List award for "Best Wedding Planner", Diane and her talented team have been the creative force behind weddings and events in the metropolitan area since 1986. Video Express has had the pleasure of videoing numerous projects with Covenant Weddings, including Donnie Simpson's (WPGC 95.5) $140,000 Wedding Wish Giveaway in 2007.

Diane and her group of planners always do a fabulous job. They are professional, pleasant, and willing to make everyone's day enjoyable, whether you are a working vendor or the one walking down the aisle. Events run smoothly, look beautiful, and leave a lasting impression. Take a look at Toni & Anton's video below as an example. Diane coordinated their August 25, 2007 nuptials at Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville, Maryland. Jeanette was their videographer.

Sara and Brad - November 24, 2007 - University of Maryland College Park

Sara and Brad were married Thanksgiving weekend of 2007 at the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel with the reception following at the University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center (by Marriott). Video Express videos weddings at UMD at least a few times every season; our studio is close to campus and the chapel is a popular ceremony spot for College Park alumni, faculty, staff, and family. It is a beautiful church that looks great on video and welcomes ceremonies of all religious beliefs. The Inn and Conference Center does a wonderful job with receptions and is convenient to the chapel.

Tom did a great job capturing all of Sara and Brad's special moments. The weather was a little cold, but the sunshine made up for it on video! You can view their slow motion summary below. Sara and Brad are (surprisingly) the first couple to ever select the piano theme from the sweet movie Love Actually as one of the songs for their video and it worked beautifully. Paired with My Wish by Rascal Flatts, the clip is both visually and emotionally moving. Enjoy!

Carol Turner & Avi Klein - March 1, 2008 - National Press Club

Video Express was honored to video the wedding of Carol Turner and Avi Klein, married March 1, 2008, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Carol is a line producer for shows like "Dance War" on ABC and multiple comedy and music specials for HBO. The couples' wedding was profiled in the March 9 2008 edition New York Times (read the full article here) and primarily focused on how Carol and Avi met and became engaged. Mark Bargeski, owner and founder of Video Express, was their videographer. He can be seen in action in the photo below, getting great footage of Avi being lifted into the air during the traditional dance of the Hora.

Carol and Avi also learned a choreographed routine for their first dance, something that is becoming a popular trend at wedding receptions. Check out the clip below! Think they got advice from Carol's colleagues Bruno and Carrie Ann beforehand?
